to project something onto someone

This is not just to do with projecting movies onto a screen, but it's about projecting your feelings onto other people.

1. To display pictures or films on a screen by projecting light through an image, like in a cinema.

2. In a similar way to 1. (above) it is possible for us to project our emotions onto other people.

The Macmillan dictionary defines it like this:

to imagine an emotion that you feel is also being felt by someone else, especially without realizing that you are doing this

project something onto someone

His mother had projected her anxieties onto him.
